Mindfulness: A key practice in emotion management and mental health.

Have you ever heard of mindfulness? Well, let’s start with the following; chances are that you are under a lot of stress or at least know someone who is. And, without a doubt, neither you nor that person are the only ones going through this situation. According to an article published in the Harvard Gazette, 80% of people live with daily stress and have difficulty calming their minds. Everyone experiencing mental health problems often struggles to keep their mind from wandering. Often, having strong emotions can cause attention to focus on negative thoughts. When this is combined with daily stressors, all of this can seem, at best, difficult to control.

What does this practice consist of?

This active state of mindfulness allows you to observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment and also to give your full attention to what you are doing at that moment. When you slow down and become aware of what is happening “in the moment,” you can calmly observe what is happening within you and around you without feeling overwhelmed. In this state, you can act without overreacting and make decisions that are in line with your core values. Everyone can tap into their capacity for mindfulness. Like any other skill, it is easier when practiced daily. Most people have a habit of letting their mind wander, so it takes effort to become aware of what they are experiencing in the moment and tune into their emotions and thoughts.

What are the benefits?

The cultivation of mindfulness has its roots in Buddhism, but most religions include some form of prayer or meditation technique that helps divert thoughts from habitual preoccupations to an appreciation of the moment and a broader perspective on life.

Not long ago, the practice of mindfulness meditation was successfully introduced into mainstream medicine. And it was shown that, mindfulness practice can produce improvements in physical and psychological symptoms, as well as positive changes in health, attitudes and behaviors.

Improves well-being:

Increasing the capacity for mindfulness favors many attitudes that contribute to a satisfying life. Being mindful makes it easier to savor life’s pleasures as they occur. It helps to participate fully in activities and creates a greater ability to cope with adverse events. By focusing on the here and now, many people who practice mindfulness find that they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets about the past. In other words, they are less concerned about success and self-esteem, and are better able to establish deep bonds with others.

Positive mindfulness improves physical health:

Which is a huge benefit when it comes to improving our performance. Mental health should be one of the priorities in anyone’s life. If any external situation affects us; it will diminish our emotional situation. And, therefore, our productivity. In recent years, psychotherapists have resorted to mindfulness meditation as an important element in the treatment of a number of problems. These include depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, relationship conflicts, anxiety disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

How does it work?

Some experts believe that mindfulness works, in part, by helping people accept their experiences-including painful emotions-rather than reacting to them with aversion and avoidance. It is increasingly common to combine mindfulness meditation with psychotherapy. Especially with cognitive behavioral therapy. This development makes sense, as both meditation and cognitive-behavioral therapy share the common goal of helping people gain perspective on irrational, maladaptive, and self-defeating thoughts.

In conclusion.

Mindfulness has great benefits for all aspects of our lives and that includes work. Nothing would be more productive for companies than to help their employees develop an environment so focused that each worker is concentrating on their tasks without losing direction or concentration.
