Learn about the consequences of having unmotivated and dissatisfied employees.

Job dissatisfaction leads to low morale among workers and if employees have the feeling that their jobs are meaningless and boring, they will have a negative attitude that will undoubtedly lead to a decrease in productivity. The consequences of having unmotivated and dissatisfied employees can be far-reaching and negative, and this issue is of concern to leaders of small businesses and large companies alike.

Remember, if employees are unhappy with their work, results will suffer. Which, not only means a decrease in a company’s profitability and earnings. Also, the deterioration of health, the appearance of emotional problems, depression and anxiety in unmotivated employees.

Demotivated employees: Why do they originate?

Around 40% of employees report that their work is very stressful or extremely demanding. Heavy workloads, team conflicts, poor management and low pay all contribute to demotivated employees. If these factors are not addressed, they can lead to decreased productivity and high employee turnover. So, knowing what makes employees unhappy is the first step to improving their morale and satisfaction. For example, a manager or leader who fails to recognize and reward hard work can end up with an unmotivated and, worse, depressed team. Business coaching expert José, L. Meléndez says in this regard:

“Anyone who believes they can overcome a state of depression, languor, burnout at work, emotional exhaustion due to their toxic routine, in a solitary manner, is deluded and digging their own pit with their own thoughts.”

Does your organization lack clearly defined values or have unrealistic goals? Do your employees seem unmotivated and dissatisfied? Job stress and burnout can further affect productivity at work. No one likes to work late into the night or cancel vacation plans to work more. It is estimated that over 70% of employees look for new jobs because of low pay or lack of recognition; while others do so because they are dissatisfied with their teams, supervisors or work environment. Poor communication can also hurt job satisfaction.

Consequences of having unmotivated and dissatisfied employees…

There are many consequences that a company must face if it has unmotivated employees who have not been properly treated. Let’s remember that demotivation at work must be stopped; otherwise it is a harmful virus that ends up making the whole team sick and, therefore, undesirable results occur, among them:

Unmotivated employees are less productive:

Employee satisfaction, productivity and job performance are strongly connected. Companies that invest in the happiness of their employees achieve faster growth and higher productivity than other companies. Investing in your team is the smartest decision you can make for your company, if you have unmotivated and dissatisfied employees don’t be surprised that productivity goes down more and more, and that the goals you set are harder to achieve. Employees are the foundation of any company because they will encourage the path you set out to reach its goal, however, with unmotivated employees that path will deviate, stagnate or even suddenly stop.

Each year, lost productivity costs companies as much as $7 trillion. Some companies overlook the importance of employee training, which can decrease job satisfaction and increase the percentage of unmotivated employees. Some common mistakes affect team morale and productivity and the workplace as a whole.

Job stress within the team:

When employees are unhappy with their work, they are much more likely to experience and report job stress. Workers who are dissatisfied or unmotivated with their work are much less likely to report feeling stressed about their work. If a person is not doing something they enjoy, they are likely to feel dissatisfied, and even small things will make them feel stressed and unhappy. Job stress will generate losses, because it will prevent staff from integrating into the team and achieving objectives.

High employee turnover rates:

Low job satisfaction also generates high turnover rates among employees. Sooner or later, unmotivated employees will quit in order to find a job they really enjoy doing. Many industries, such as the restaurant industry, suffer from high turnover rates and the inability to retain qualified workers. It is up to small business leaders and managers to find a way to increase job satisfaction, especially in difficult sectors where the jobs are tough and the pay is low.

Low productivity:

Low job satisfaction coupled with low employee morale equates to a lack of productivity in the workplace. Again, it comes down to human nature. When someone is unhappy or when there are unmotivated employees, they will not concentrate well and will not pay attention to their respective tasks. Unmotivated employees find hundreds of other things to do that make them happy. When one team member shows low productivity, it is natural that other team members will become dissatisfied as a result, and their productivity will start to decrease as well.

Low Customer Retention:

When customers have a problem with the company or product and receive excellent service from satisfied employees, satisfied customers are created. The company is more likely to retain satisfied customers when the staff continually demonstrates its ability to exceed expectations.

Customer retention is critical to maintaining a steady stream of revenue. If employees are unmotivated, they cannot retain valuable customers.

In conclusion…

We can say that job dissatisfaction negatively affects both the organization and the employees. If job dissatisfaction prevails, the organization is likely to be affected by poor customer service, low quality production and poor profitability.

It is clear and evident that unmotivated employees lack loyalty and commitment and will also show very little original thinking and will be absent from work very often. All of this, taken together, will clearly translate into poor performance and low profitability for the organization. What to do about it? How do I lead and how do I handle this situation?
